Four (4) decades of attaining quality and excellence in the shipmanning business; providing competent, qualified and competitive seafarers to the world’s shipping industry, and countless stories of triumphs and challenges behind the forty (40) years of existence; this is the story of the Filipino Association for Mariners’ Employment, Inc. (FAME).

40 years may seem more like a number but the efforts and commitment of the people behind this spectacular achievement was countless. Without a doubt, FAME was the birth of the new maritime.

This is FAME at 40, and this is worth than 40 reasons to celebrate. On 27 March 2014, wearing their suit and tie for men and formal gown for ladies, friends and important personalities from the industry and government graced the FAME Anniversary Dinner Ball at Solaire Resort & Casino Manila to witness and celebrate FAME’s history and success for a night of celebration, dance, and entertainment. It was splendid. It was remarkable.

Congressman Jesulito A. Manalo, the man behind the newly enacted R.A. 10635 or the “MARINA Law”, the Guest of Honour of the night delivered a moving and inspiring message quoting that FAME really is an organization worth emulating and at the same time could already be attributed as an institution of the maritime industry.

While it’s maybe surreal 40 years ago to reach this far, this historic occasion would not have happened without the valuable efforts and dedication of all the people behind this milestone success, especially the past Presidents, who were also honoured that night, and of which the speaker quoted “their valuable help for having built a foundation during their term serves as the building block for the next presidents of FAME until the structure of the organization is a very firm foundation that people could stand on”. The Awardees-Past Presidents were:

·         Comm. Benjanim P. Mata – The Founding President, 1974-1975
·         Capt. Inocencio P. Estaniel (+) – President, 1975-1976
·         Mr. Peter N. Toundjis (+) – President, 1976-1977
·         Capt. Vicente J. Brillantes (+) – President, 1977-1986
·         Capt. Cesar P. Carandang – President, 1986-1988
·         Mr. Vicente F. Aldanese, Jr. – President, 1988-2004
·         Ms. Josephine J. Francisco – President, 2004-2006
·         Engr. Sammuel T. Lim – President, 2006-2008
·         Mr. Marlon R. Roño – 2008-2009
·         Mr. Ericson M. Marquez – 2009-2011
·         Mr. Jose Albar G. Kato – 2011-2013

Truly, they are the genius of this industry for without their leadership and guidance, unselfish service and contributions, FAME will not be here today. We shall also not forget the equally valuable efforts and support of the Board of Directors and the general membership. The relationship which grew over the years indeed proved that they are the backbone of this foundation to stand the test of time.

40 years of excellence and beyond, as the theme speaks does not stop here. It is a start of a new aim, of a new journey, another decade, perhaps a century of excellence and beyond. As FAME marks another milestone in history, it also marks a new beginning of commitment to better and higher business standards, renewed and strengthened partnership with the government and all industry players, and stronger passion in protecting and maintaining our country’s distinctiveness as the manning capital of the world.
