“THE INTERVIEW AND SELECTION OF SEAFARER APPLICANTS” 

The 1st Info-series seminar conducted by FAME was held on 29 June 2005 at the Century Ballroom, Century Park Hotel, Malate, Manila. 

The program started with the welcome salvo of Engr. Sammuel Lim, Co-Chairman of the FAME Special Projects and Events Committee and opening remarks from Capt. Alfonso R. Del Castillo, President of TSM Shipping Phils. Inc. and a Board Member of FAME. 

Overview & Selection Techniques 

The President of “K” Line Maritime Training Corporation, Ms. Virginia Lineses, shared her company’s long study and proven techniques in interviewing and selecting crew. She stressed that same techniques have won the trust and confidence of their Japanese principals. 

What is the Pinoy Seaman’s Psyche? 

Dr. Felipe Landa Jocano, a Professor Emeritus at the Asian Center of the University of the Philippines, Executive Director of PUNLAD Research House, Inc., and author of various prominent books on Filipino culture, discussed how the Filipino ASAL (Psyche) influenced the working performance of the Filipino seafarers. Giving a number of hilarious anecdotes, he was able to deliver a meaningful discussion, which leaves everyone with awe and amusement on the new knowledge, and realizations he imparted to the participants. 

Legal Concerns Involved during the Interview and Selection Process 

The present Managing Partner of Del Rosario and Del Rosario Law Offices, Atty. Ruben Del Rosario, elaborated on the do’s and don’ts when interviewing an applicant and the confidentiality of the applicants’ past performance during his 30-minute speech 

Sharing of Best Practices 

Commo. Adonis B. Donato, President of OSM Maritime Services, Inc; President of Master & Mates Association of the Philippines; Chairman of the Maritime Forum, Inc. and the VP-Internal Affairs of FAME, shared his knowledge and OSM’s best interview and selection practices. 

Recruitment and Performance of crew 

A result-oriented HR manager with more than 20 years in experience in human resource management, general affairs and administrative services particularly in building relationships, articulating visions and implementing goals and objectives, Ms. Marilyn B. Fabiana, generously shared the different types of Psychological Tests given to applicants. She stressed that the strategy and measures that a company uses in interviewing and selecting seafarers has a great effect on the future performance of the seafarers, which can directly influence either the success or failure of the manning company. 

The seminar was highlighted by a role-playing of the common mistakes done during interviews. Participants from Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, Jebsens Maritime, Inc., Ventis Maritime Corporation, NYK-FIL Ship Management and Dolphin Ship Management Inc. enthusiastically volunteered and made the workshop meaningful.
