With the aim to update the industry as regards the new requirement of the Australian Government on the issuance of the Maritime Crew Visa (MCV), the Australian Embassy asked FAME on how they will be assisted to extend the information to the Philippine Seafaring Industry. To facilitate this, FAME conducted a half-day info-series, entitled, “Update on Australian Maritime Crew Visa” on Friday, 4th of July 2007, 0900-1100H at Park Ballroom of Century Park Hotel Manila.

The info-series was not exclusive for FAME members, as those manning companies that are not members of the Association were also invited. It was again an added thumbs-up for the Association where various participants from the industry totaling to Two Hundred Forty Nine (249) arrived.

Engr. Sammuel T. Lim, president of FAME, gave very brief opening remarks. He thanked all the participants particularly the resource speakers and acknowledged the presence of the DOLE newly appointed head of the Maritime Affairs Mr. Ike Enriquez.

There were two speakers in the info-series: the first resource speaker was Mr. Bernard Unkles, Senior Migration Officer, Second Secretary of Immigration who gave updates about the Maritime Crew Visa. The other one was Mr. Peter Goellnicht, Principal Migration Officer, First Secretary of Immigration who discussed about the Transit Visa.

One of the significant features of the discussion is that the Maritime Crew Visa (MCV) can be applied through the internet by visa applicant or a third party authorized by the applicant e.g. manning company, crew manning agent. However, the Australian legislation pointed out that the crew member-applicant must be outside Australia at the time of application for a visa.

Likewise, there was a slot for an open forum that gave a chance for the participants to pose questions and address problems they frequently came across in the application of the visa. It was Mr. Reuben Romero, ever-cooperative Director of the Association, who served as host-moderator of the info-series.

The info-series was concluded by a short closing remark of the hard-working Mr. James E. Nicol, Director of the Association, extending appreciation and gratefulness for all participants.

Those who want to get full details and contents of the discussion can download it from the FAME Website.
